Earthquake in Chengdu

There was an earthquake in Chengdu. 7.9. 8500 people killed. Schools collapsing. I wonder if these were some of the schools we were supposed to visit. I wonder if these are friends of Martha. It’s horrible.

Dangit. More loose ends for BCAP

Martha Morton called & said I owed her some things. It seems I never turned in my Culture III assignment (I did that… DIDN’T I???), and I didn’t turn in my signed waiver form (think I just spaced on that & walked out with it), & I have to give her some dissemination plan. Dang, I don’t know how I’m going to disseminate information about China right now. Right now I’m not completely sure how I’m going to disseminate Edgar Allan Poe to freshmen.

I am really grateful for this opportunity, but DADGUM does anyone realize how much work is involved in being a teacher?

Planning & loose ends & restlessness

I feel so overwhelmed at the thought of trying to have everything done before we leave on June 6th. June 5th is our last day of semester exams, so I won’t even have a work day between classes and leaving, much less a day for organizing and packing.

I keep thinking of things I need to do, but I’m so scattered. Like:

I need to call the credit card company & tell them I’m going to China so pretty please don’t cut off my credit.
Get some plug adapters

There was other stuff I was just thinking about… Now what was that?

Somehow have to have all my grades in, including my semester exam grades, which I’ll finish giving at 1:00 the day before I leave — that end of school checkout list (the scavenger hunt)…

Plus, at home I have the two teenagers. I hate to leave them completely unsupervised for a month… maybe they could hang out with my sister in NWA??

I have a peahen sitting on eggs that should hatch next week. I have a passle of chicken chicks that have only just moved to the outside brooder. Another passle of chicks is supposed to come in June 5th. I should have guinea eggs hatching sometime end of May (when did I actually start incubating those?). My husband & kids are going to have to be on double critter duty while I’m gone. I know they’ll hate that. I hope my critters all fare okay while I’m gone.

Gosh, one week between school & the trip would’ve been so helpful. I’m feeling scattered & rattled. I don’t even know that I’m excited. I’m too wigged out to be excited just yet. I’ll be excited to be on that plane & have all this stress behind me. I mean, once the plane takes off what’s done is done & what was left undone will work itself out.

And the nerve of my school — they’re expecting me to TEACH and, like, DO MY JOB for the next four weeks!

A first-hand review of Ryokan Rikiya

I got a notice on my forum query about Ryokan Rikiya. This was encouraging.

Diplomatic begging

I’ve been working on getting donations for our gifts to the Chinese schools. So far I’ve contacted the state house, the Hot Springs Department of Tourism, The Arkansas Heritage Society, a couple of places in D.C., Disney (what could be more American), an my senator. The smaller the place is, the more willing they seem to be to donate. Today I got a sack of pens and arkansas shaped notepads from the Heritage Society (Thanks Mrs. Whitfield!). They look great.

Susie got some t-shirts from LRSD today. I am hoping we can get some of those postcards with the picture of LRSD on them. The school is so beautiful. I think that would be something they would be interested in.

I am hoping that I can come up with a few gifts that are more generally U.S. and not so specific to Arkansas. So far I’ve struck out with D.C. They aren’t a state, so they don’t have the funding to donate such items (!). Also, according to the federal government’s website and email inquiry, there is no appropriate department for such things. Isn’t that nice? No agency for promoting grassroots cultural exchange and understanding. Nice.

I’ll keep going though. I’m good at this kind of begging. I’m actually getting a little worried about having to carry all this stuff in my luggage. Hopefully I’ll be able to split it up with someone.
